​The vintage and archival collection of eyeglasses and tools at S.R. Gopal Rao is a testament to an enduring legacy that began in the early 1900s. Over the decades, we have meticulously preserved a range of historic eyewear, from locally manufactured frames of the mid-20th century to iconic international designs introduced in later years. This collection includes rare spectacles, classics like Altan gold frames to Vintage Dior, Silhouette, Charmant & more, and tools that highlight the evolution of optometry practices.

A small yet significant portion of this collection is now displayed at our showrooms in Jayanagar, Residency Road, and N.R. Road. These exhibits celebrate the heritage of S.R. Gopal Rao, showcasing how it has adapted to changing times while preserving its roots in quality and craftsmanship. This curated display not only honors our history but also serves as a bridge connecting generations of eyewear enthusiasts.
THE RELICS

The Clock Bushing Tool
Used by S.N.Rama Rao in early 1900's
The Bergeon Clock Bushing Tool is a precision-crafted tool designed for repairing worn pivot holes in mechanical clock plates. Manufactured by the renowned Swiss company Bergeon, known for its high-quality horological tools since the late 18th century, this model became a staple in clock repair workshops by the early 1900s. This tool was used to ream and enlarge worn pivot holes and insert replacement bushings, restoring the smooth operation of clock mechanisms. Its durable aluminum construction and versatile design accommodated a wide range of clock sizes, making it indispensable for professional horologists and hobbyists alike. The Bergeon Clock Bushing Tool reflects the craftsmanship and innovation of early 20th-century horology, preserving the functionality of antique timepieces for generations. Our piece, acquired in the early 1900s, remains a testament to the enduring quality of Swiss engineering.

The Branding Iron
Use by S.R.Gopal Rao & Family
In an era where branding wasn’t just a logo, but a legacy, this vintage Branding Tool was used to emboss names, marks, or origin labels onto spectacle components. Whether on temples or leather cases, this tool made sure craftsmanship had an identity—literally pressed into memory. A true emblem of how eyewear carried its maker’s pride.
This tool was made in 1957 by a company called Star Products from Bombay. You will be able to see the details of this product on the container that holds it.



The Grinding Tool
Used from the 1930's
In optical shops, sharpening and grinding stone wheels were essential tools used for shaping, grinding, and finishing optical lenses. These tools played a critical role in the lens manufacturing process during the early 20th century. They were used for shaping the lens, fine grinding, polishing, wet grinding and for customisations. Early grinding wheels were made from natural materials like sandstone or granite but later evolved to include synthetic abrasives like diamond or metal-bonded materials for greater precision and durability.


Vintage Silhouette
Dispensed from the 1980s
Silhouette pioneered minimalist eyewear with a futuristic vision. Their vintage rimless models still stand out for their lightweight precision and sleek aesthetic. A true ode to Austrian engineering and subtle sophistication, decades ahead of their time.This piece that you see on display was curated in the 1980's and we were one of the first retailers to dispense silhouette eyeglasses then. The brand grew along with us.

Dior Vintage Frames

Christian Dior’s vintage eyewear captures the golden era of couture. Think bold silhouettes, soft curves, and unmistakable elegance. These archival frames reflect the spirit of Dior's ateliers—luxurious, feminine, and unapologetically stylish.

Charmant Originals
Vintage from the 1990s
The Charmant 8467 TN model is part of the renowned Charmant Titanium eyewear collection, celebrated for its innovative use of pure titanium and beta-titanium materials. Charmant, a Japanese company founded in 1956, has been a leader in high-quality eyewear and titanium expertise. Titanium frames are known for their ultra-lightweight strength, hypoallergenic properties, and superior corrosion resistance, making them ideal for both style and durability. This pieces is from the early 1990's and is called the Synthes Eyez 8467 TN.


The Grandfather Clock

An antique grandfather clock crafted by the renowned S.N.Rama Rao in the early 1900s now graces the Jayanagar showroom of S.R.Gopal Rao. A master watchmaker and clockmaker, S.N.Rama Rao was celebrated for his precision and artistry, serving as the exclusive optician and craftsman to the Maharaja of Mysore, Rajarshi Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. This clock, a testament to his exceptional craftsmanship, reflects the elegance and ingenuity of its era.

The clock stands as a symbol of timeless heritage, blending intricate design with mechanical excellence. Its presence at the showroom not only honours S.N.Rama Rao's legacy but also offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history of horology and the family's enduring commitment to quality and tradition.

In the Mysore Maharaja's private museum
The Mysore Maharaja's private museum proudly displays eyeglasses dispensed by S.N. Rama Rao, a distinguished optician and craftsman of the early 1900s. These glasses bear his name engraved on them, serving as a mark of authenticity and excellence. S.N. Rama Rao was renowned for his precision and artistry, being the exclusive optician to the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore, Rajarshi Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. This exhibit is not only a functional piece of history but also a symbol of the craftsmanship and heritage that defined an era. It stands as a tribute to S.N. Rama Rao's legacy and his contribution to the royal family's lifestyle and vision care.



Cerruti 1881

The gold metal frames made and sold by Cerruti 1881 in the 1980s epitomise the brand's dedication to luxury and timeless design. Among these, the piece in our collection is a modified aviator frame featuring a double bridge and a sleek gold rim, showcasing the sophisticated craftsmanship Cerruti 1881 was renowned for.

Launched in the late 1970s, Cerruti 1881 eyewear blended Italian elegance with high-quality materials, often produced in collaboration with Rodenstock during the late 1980s. This particular frame reflects the era's penchant for bold yet refined styles, making it a prized example of vintage eyewear innovation. Now preserved as part of our curated collection, it stands as a testament to Cerruti's legacy of merging fashion and functionality.
