Myopia Management Centre Myopia is of growing concern today and it is assumed that by 2050 over half the worlds population will be myopic. As such, we at S.R.Gopal Rao, being the oldest opticians in Bangalore with its Founder being the first qualified Optometrist in the city, have taken several steps to update our oldest store and create India's first in store Myopia Management Centre in association with industry experts - Zeiss. Try our online assessment calculator : MYOPIA RISK ASSESSMENT BOOK AN APPOINTMENT | READ MORE | DIY VISION TESTING KIT What is Myopia? What are the signs to look out for in a child who has Myopia? Myopia, also known as short-sightedness, is a common refractive error where distant objects appear blurry, while close-up objects can be seen more clearly. Myopia usually develops in early childhood, and spurts during pre-teens and teens; your child may not even know that they have a vision problem and assume everyone sees the same way and will not bring it to your attention. It becomes important to watch out for signs of vision problems in your child(ren) and ensure yearly eye check ups are a part of their health routine. It is estimated that by 2050, 50% of the world's population would be Myopic. Trouble seeing things written on the black board Complaints by the teacher that the child is jotting down notes incorrectly Partially closing their eye lids/squeezing the eyelids when trying to focus or see things Complaining of headache by the end of the day Frequent rubbing of eyes Excessive blinking/ watering of the eye Desire to sit close to watch TV Wanting to sit in the front row of the classroom to see things clearly Decline in academic performance How do you know if your child has myopia and what are the signs to look out for? What are the Causes of Myopia : The eye experts are unsure of the actual causes of Myopia, but assume it could be largely due to : Genetics - plays a significant role, as children with myopic parents are more likely to develop it. Environmental factors such as - Increased time spent in front of near devices or gadgets and reduced outdoor activities. What is Progressive Myopia? During Pre-teens and Teens, especially between the ages of 6 years and 16 years, there is a lot of growth in the body. The eye being a part of the body tends to grow too! This causes the increase in the axial length for some of those with myopia i.e eyeball elongates, which induces the progression of myopia. If left untreated, it will lead to High Myopia. Apart from blurred vision, high and uncontrolled myopia can cause serious eye conditions such as: Retinal tear/ detachment Myopic macular degeneration Glaucoma Cataracts How to treat and manage Myopia? Several strategies can help manage myopia in children and slow down its progression, while providing clearer vision at the same time. Myopia management is effective and applies only to children between the ages of 6 years and 16 years. Your optometrists can recommend the treatment options, they think which best suits your child’s needs during eye examination. Myopia can affect your child’s vision and eye health more than you think, besides needing heavier prescriptions in adulthood. However, early action can help slow the progression of myopia and protect your child’s vision. There are several options for Myopia Management, which are provided by understanding the causes and recognising the symptoms. Our Optometrists will provide one of the following, post an eye examination and consultation : Myopia control spectacle lenses (lens for myopia) Contact lenses (lens for correction of myopia) Eye drops to control Myopia Combination therapies About our Myopia Management Centre : We at S.R.Gopal Rao Opticians & Optometrists have launched India’s first retail housed - clinical Myopia Management Centre's - supported by Zeiss. • Contact Lenses Fitting | S.R.Gopal Rao Opticians | Bengaluru | Best optical shop in Bangalore

We specialize in contact lens fitting and examinations, a process distinct from regular eye exams, ensuring optimal comfort and vision for each patient. Dispensing Contact Lenses While this may seem to be a routine process for some, it is actually quite different from the regular eye examination that is conducted. Contact lenses sit directly on the corneal surface of the eye. As such the prescription for some users will be different from their spectacle power and this correction is done taking into account the vertex distance. CONTACT LENSES - EYE EXAMINATION AND FITTING What is the vertex distance? Vertex distance is the distance between the back surface of a corrective lens in the spectacle frame and the front of the cornea. In case of spectacles there is a significant vertex distance between the cornea and the back surface of the lens unlike contact lenses which are worn directly on the corneal surface. As such, in order to retain the same visual clarity as seen through spectacles when wearing contact lenses, it is important for the Optometrist to consider the following parameters when prescribing contact lenses: Health of the cornea Spectacle lens power compensated for contact lens prescription Corneal curvature which is checked using the keratometer to arrive at the base curve Patient lifestyle Tear film evaluation Based on these parameters, our Optometrists will prescribe contact lenses. It is for these reasons, we always recommend visiting a qualified Optometrist before making your purchase of contact lenses. One can always set up an appointment with our Optometrists at our store clinics to do this. It is easy to reorder your contact lenses and contact lens solution online, which can be done via our website : www.getspexy.com ;provided your prescription or product hasn’t changed. However, if it is your first time wearing contact lenses or if you are facing discomfort with your existing lenses, then it is important to make an informed decision in consultation with your Optometrist. What is the process for First Time Wearers of Contact Lenses? In addition to points listed above, for first time wearers our Optometrists will recommend trial lenses (if available with the company). This is done for the Optometrist and wearer to be sure about the contact lenses fitting, comfort and for ease of use. The Optometrist will spend time training the patient at the clinic on how to use and maintain these contact lenses. This is a part of our contact lens consultation process. In case of first time wearers or change in contact lenses due to power or product for existing users, our Optometrists will check the contact lens fitting and vision at the time of dispensing these lenses. Doing this will ascertain compatibility, comfort when worn and clear vision. At S.R.Gopal Rao Opticians & Optometrists we also dispense coloured contact lenses (both prescription and plano), RGP contact lenses, Scleral contact lenses and specialised contact lenses for high cylindrical powers and Keratoconus patients . Visit us to understand how this is done by the best! Our contact lens practices are at Jayanagar, Residency Road and N.R.Road - Bangalore. Visit us to understand our processes and the care that goes into dispensing each item. Every eye piece in our store is important and so is every customer. It was the late 19th century. Bifocals had been around for a few decades now and trifocals had been recently invented. Contact lenses were still a concept being explored that wouldn’t come into their own for at least half a century. The world over, men and women were trying out different eye-wear to enhance vision. As evolutionary beings, we had come a long way since Seneca read books using a globe of water for magnification in 4 BC. India was not unfamiliar with visual aids. There have been references in our texts which point to usage as early as the 19th century, and even invention in South India. Vision aids may have been an accessory of the elite in pre-independence India but a definite market did exist. The industry however, was in a nascent space. It was in this environment that a young man brought alive his vision and entrepreneurial dynamism. A young retailer of spectacles, watches and dentistry instruments, set up shop in the Cantonment area of Bangalore to dispense opticianry of quality. Full of verve and versatility, this young man brought his business acumen to usher in organised and professional retail services to a fledgling industry. HISTORY & HERITAGE MILESTONES S.N.Rama Rao was a dentist, watchmaker and optician. He had set up shop in the late 19th century opposite Tippu Sultan's Fort in Kalasipalayam. He was the personal optician to the Erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore 1800s 1936-1971 S.R.Gopal Rao the son of S.N.Rama Rao becomes the first qualified Optometrist in Bangalore. He rebrands the store and gives it its present identity on N R Road He single handedly positions the store as a focused retailer of prescription spectacles and sunglasses A visionary himself he sets up an in house lens grinding workshop to ensure that his patrons get the most accurate lenses and the fastest service. 1971-1982 S.R.Gopal Rao was a name born to be carried forward by generations to come. In 1971 with Malathi Manay and Chandrashekar Manay the second generation took succession. In 1972 the store saw its first renovation, a step to newer modern times that the brand has always embraced. In 1974, continuing with the same pioneering spirit, the business started its first contact lens practice and became one of the earliest retailers in the city to do so. 1982-2011 It's time for the third generation to take the brand to loftier heights. Spectacles and Photography: A Lens Through History The relationship between spectacles and photography has evolved over time, intertwining the worlds of art, technology, and personal expression. From the symbolic use of glasses in early photographic portraits to the iconic eyewear worn by legendary photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand, spectacles have been more than just visual aids—they've become a part of the narrative itself. This connection extends beyond the aesthetic, as companies like ZEISS , Nikon , and Leica have bridged the gap between camera lenses and eyeglass lenses, influencing how we capture and view the world. At S.R.Gopal Rao Opticians and Optometrists , we celebrate this rich interplay of optics and imagery, offering luxury eyewear that embodies both precision and style. As you read on, you'll explore how these elements converge, shaping not just the art of photography but also the way we see ourselves. Spectacles and Early Photography In the Victorian era, a period marked by rapid technological and cultural evolution, the invention of photography revolutionised how people were portrayed. Portraits of prominent figures often included spectacles, not just as a necessity but as a symbol of intellectual stature. Mathew Brady, often referred to as the father of photojournalism, is a fitting example when discussing the intersection of spectacles and early photography. Brady was a pioneering photographer during the American Civil War, and he is frequently depicted wearing spectacles in portraits. Studios also recognized the power of spectacles in photography as a prop. Early photography and glasses had a deeper connection, photographers would sometimes include glasses in their compositions to convey certain qualities about their subjects. Whether aiming to highlight a serious demeanour or an air of fashion, these early photographic practices set the tone for the enduring association between eyewear and personality in visual culture. Adding a unique historical touch, did you know that Queen Victoria herself was photographed with glasses to emphasise her regal intellect? Photographers & Eyewear Throughout history, some iconic photographers have become almost as famous for their eyewear as for their photographs. Henri Cartier-Bresson, often credited as the father of modern photojournalism, was rarely seen without his round spectacles. These glasses became an integral part of his artistic identity, symbolising his meticulous attention to detail and profound perspective on human nature. Garry Winogrand, a renowned American street photographer known for his spontaneous images of urban life. Winogrand was often seen wearing glasses, which became synonymous with his identity as a photographer. His eyewear symbolised his keen observation skills and his ability to capture the raw, unfiltered moments of everyday life. Winogrand's glasses were more than just a practical accessory; they were a part of his visual approach, helping him to see and frame the world in his distinctive, candid style. The Deep Connection Between Lenses and Photography The relationship between lenses and photography goes beyond their practical uses; it delves into a history of innovation and cross-functional development. Companies specialising in vision-related lenses often find synergies with those creating camera lenses, leading to advancements in both fields. ZEISS is a prime example of this connection. Known for their precision in crafting eyeglass lenses, ZEISS also provides high-quality lenses for cameras and medical equipment like microscopes. This dual expertise ensures that whether you're capturing a moment through a camera or viewing the world through prescription lenses, the clarity and precision remain unmatched. Nikon followed a similar path. Originally renowned for their cameras, Nikon later expanded into the eyeglass lens market. Their transition showcases how optical technologies can be adapted across different uses, maintaining the same standard of excellence. Leica, a legendary camera manufacturer, partnered with Mykita, an innovative eyewear brand, to create eyewear that embodies both optical precision and contemporary design. Leica’s expertise in camera lenses is seamlessly integrated into Mykita’s eyewear, offering a unique blend of functionality and style. Another interesting example is Rodenstock , a German company with a long history in both photography and eyewear. Rodenstock has produced camera lenses and precision optics since the early 20th century, and they are also a leading manufacturer of premium eyeglass lenses today. Their deep understanding of optics allows them to offer cutting-edge solutions in both fields. These examples highlight a deeper connection within the world of optics, where expertise in creating camera lenses often translates into innovations in vision-related lenses. This cross-functional development enriches both photography and eyewear, offering tools that enhance how we capture and view the world around us. Iconic Images and Eyewear Eyewear has played a significant role in shaping the identities of many iconic figures, often becoming integral to their public image, making these photographs truly iconic. Here are some notable examples: John Lennon : John Lennon’s Windsor glasses, with their perfectly round lenses and temples attached at the middle, became iconic after he first wore them in the 1966 movie How I Won the War . Lennon continued to wear these glasses throughout his life, solidifying their association with his distinctive style and vision as both a musician and activist. Michael Jackson : Michael Jackson frequently wore Ray-Ban aviators, particularly the Ray-Ban 3025 style, which became a signature part of his look. He also donned Ray-Ban Wayfarers extensively during certain periods, further enhancing their status as an iconic fashion accessory. John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in The Blues Brothers : The promotional images of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as Jake and Elwood Blues are memorable for their black suits, fedoras, and especially their Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses. These glasses became synonymous with the characters' cool, rebellious attitude, making the images iconic. Malcolm X : Browline glasses are often associated with Malcolm X, who was frequently photographed wearing them during his advocacy for civil rights. Though popular in the 1950s, these glasses have since become emblematic of Malcolm X’s powerful leadership and commitment to social justice. Le Corbusier : Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, was a visionary architect whose square glasses became a symbol of his modernist approach. His eyewear reflected his intellectual and artistic persona, contributing to his lasting influence in architecture and design. Satyajit Ray : The renowned Indian filmmaker and writer Satyajit Ray is often seen wearing his distinctive square glasses. His cinematic eyewear became a key part of his intellectual and artistic identity, reflecting his meticulous approach to cinema and storytelling. These images not only highlight the personal styles of these iconic figures but also demonstrate how eyewear can become an essential part of their legacy, influencing fashion and cultural perceptions across generations. Conclusion As we reflect on the journey through the history of spectacles and photography, it becomes clear that lenses—whether in a camera or a pair of glasses—serve as bridges between how we see the world and how we capture it. From the early days of portraits where spectacles conveyed intellect, to the modern photographers whose eyewear became as iconic as their work, the connection between these two realms is profound and enduring. Photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, and Satyajit Ray saw the world through lenses that were more than mere tools—they were extensions of their vision and identity. Similarly, companies like ZEISS, Nikon, and Leica have blurred the lines between vision correction and photographic precision, showing that the pursuit of clarity and perspective is universal. In the end, both spectacles and cameras remind us that seeing is an art form, one that shapes how we interpret the world around us. Whether you’re capturing moments behind a lens or viewing life through your glasses, you’re engaging in the same timeless practice of seeing the world through your own unique lens. This blog has been an exploration of that shared history, a reminder that every lens—whether for vision or photography—tells a story, and it's up to us to choose how we see it.
