To understand how we are GREEN you need to know how the industry works. Eyewear is made up of several sub parts and each is built from different materials. Our aim was to find a way to discard the entire unit responsibly without adding any waste to the environment. We dedicated the whole month of June to showcasing all of the steps we have put in place to make our firm more environmentally friendly as a tribute to Upcycling Day, which was observed on June 24. We organised this campaign with the expectation that it will encourage more businesses to contribute to environmental improvement and move their operations toward ecological soundness. We have invested a number of days during the month to communicate each of our activities. The "Progressive packaging for a benign tomorrow " project, in which we value our packaging and work to make it as environmentally friendly and long-lasting as possible, was introduced after we highlighted our "Trash into Treasure " efforts to collect eyeglass waste. With "Teaming up for a Better Tomorrow " we unveiled the artists we are working with to upcycle waste as part of the campaign in the weeks that followed. To wrap up the campaign, we introduced the Getspexy home brand's wooden eyewear line while promoting our "Sustain your style" program. We have the articles that were written about us and our green projects here to serve as a further reminder that upcycling is upbeat, recycling is radiant, sustainability is superior, and so, being green is gallant. Upcycling Initiative Waste is generated from lenses that are made from resin or polycarbonate, frames made from acetate or metal, lens cleaning cloths, cases made from leather, felt or plastic, nose pads made from silicon rubber and so on. We have learnt how to upcycle all these different parts now, in our own capacity, by partnering with various upcycling houses, individuals and NGOs. The waste/soiled/used eyewear is handed over to these entities who upcycle the same and use it for their own benefit. We only hope to strengthen our efforts and make the industry go green in the process. Comprehensive Eye Check Up S.R.Gopal Rao was the first qualified Optometrist in Bangalore, Karnataka. As such, it has always been important for us to be an integrated service. While we dispense the best in class eyeglasses it's integral for us to have a fully equipped clinic, with state of the art technology and highly qualified optometrists to do a complete eye check up. A full eye check up involves refraction and diagnosis of any underlying problems which may require further inspection by the Ophthalmologist, if suggested. EYE TESTING AND DISPENSING On an average, each Optometrist spends 30 minutes with a patient, first understanding any underlying health concerns, previous history of the patient, followed by a thorough eye examination and issuing a prescription. So far, Wolf has created a lot of art out of our trash and has made us proud by displaying it all over the world. 05 The Second Life Bangalore The concept of second life is based on the interconnectedness of the ideologies of the three R's : reducing, reusing, and recycling. S.R.Gopal Rao and The Second Life have gone a long way. We've worked together on initiatives like upcycling spectacle waste and making art out of trash. They assist us in making spectacle cases out of recovered felt and scrap tire tubes. They've also created a bucket to collect our trash and abandoned eyeglasses. 06 Kaipanee Terrazzo is used by Kaipanee to personalize handcrafted cementitious flooring. We just worked with this incredible company to produce stunning backgrounds. The Legacy Of S.R.Gopal Rao Opticians We are the pioneer opticians in Karnataka with roots dating back to the 19th century. Quality products, precision in dispensing and service is our main focus. This text isn't scripted but it is written by none other than the family that manages the business. Visit us to understand our processes and the care that goes into dispensing each item. Every eye piece in our store is important and so is every customer. It was the late 19th century. Bifocals had been around for a few decades now and trifocals had been recently invented. Contact lenses were still a concept being explored that wouldn’t come into their own for at least half a century. The world over, men and women were trying out different eye-wear to enhance vision. As evolutionary beings, we had come a long way since Seneca read books using a globe of water for magnification in 4 BC. India was not unfamiliar with visual aids. There have been references in our texts which point to usage as early as the 19th century, and even invention in South India. Vision aids may have been an accessory of the elite in pre-independence India but a definite market did exist. The industry however, was in a nascent space. It was in this environment that a young man brought alive his vision and entrepreneurial dynamism. A young retailer of spectacles, watches and dentistry instruments, set up shop in the Cantonment area of Bangalore to dispense opticianry of quality. Full of verve and versatility, this young man brought his business acumen to usher in organised and professional retail services to a fledgling industry. He had set up shop in the late 19th century opposite Tippu Sultan's Fort in Kalasipalayam. He was the personal optician to the Erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore 1800s 1936-1971 S.R.Gopal Rao the son of S.N.Rama Rao becomes the first qualified Optometrist in Bangalore.He rebrands the store and gives it its present identity on N R Road He single handedly positions the store as a focused retailer of prescription spectacles and sunglasses A visionary himself he sets up an in house lens grinding workshop to ensure that his patrons get the most accurate lenses and the fastest service. 1971-1982 S.R.Gopal Rao was a name born to be carried forward by generations to come. In 1971 with Malathi Manay and Chandrashekar Manay the second generation took succession. In 1972 the store saw its first renovation, a step to newer modern times that the brand has always embraced. In 1974, continuing with the same pioneering spirit, the business started its first contact lens practice and became one of the earliest retailers in the city to do so. 1982-2011 It's time for the third generation to take the brand to loftier heights. In 1982, Hemanth Manay completed his Diploma in Optometry and joined the business He broadened the brand identity by introducing international luxury and premium brands in the 1980’s. He changes the face of the company to a sought-after store for the rarest and the best.
